Welcome to the Nova Scotia Psychosis Research Unit

The Nova Scotia Psychosis Research Unit (NSPRU) was formed in 2009 to bring together researchers in Nova Scotia who are studying a variety of aspects of psychosis.

This website provides information on the members of the NSPRU, their research and related events. As well, it provides an ongoing update on relevant research conducted elsewhere in the world.

The goal of the NSPRU is to bring to benefits of research to the many people in Nova Scotia who are impacted by psychosis.

THE NSPRU is:

  • A multidisciplinary team, with representation from community stakeholders and a wide range of expertise including pharmacology, brain imaging, molecular biology, clinical and functional outcomes, addictions, wellness, pathways to care and early detection.

THE NSPRU provides:

  • Optimization of resources to compete for research funding nationally and internationally, and attract fund raising and philanthropic donations.
  • A unique multidisciplinary research environment for learners at all levels.

WHY THE NSPRU IS NEEDED:

  • Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders are disabling psychiatric conditions directly affecting approximately 4% of the population.
  • Onset is most often in late adolescence or the early adult years, and if ineffectively treated can lead to lifetime disability.
  • Collectively, psychotic disorders are one of the ten most expensive medical illnesses in Canada, with annual direct costs of at least $1.2 billion
